Students from Kelly Primary Kindergarten through 2nd grade were the lucky recipients of brand-new winter coats on February 5th. The Pittsburgh Firefighters and Operation Warm were the generous donors who provided these beautiful coats!
The Pittsburgh Firefighters hold various fundraisers throughout the year including a Night at the Races to help purchase the coats for our students. Operation Warm is a nonprofit organization that provides free, new winter coats for children in need.
“The students were excited to receive their coats from the firefighters,” said Mrs. Kelly Francis, principal at Kelly.
Students from Wilkinsburg School District have been receiving coats from both organizations since 2012. Mrs. Diane Meszaros, kindergarten teacher has been overseeing the project for the past five years.
According to Mrs. Meszaros, the Firefighters ask the sizes of the students and then deliver them to Kelly. The teachers then distribute them to the students.
“We are beyond grateful for the coats. It is so exciting to see the kids get so excited when they get to come down and pick out what color coat they want, they try it on and are just beaming from ear to ear,” said Mrs. Meszaros.
