Dr. Dan Miller, a consultant that leads professional development for our math teachers, models teaching strategies to the first grade teachers in Mrs. Haut’s class. They learn how to ask higher depth of knowledge questions and how to use accountable talk. Accountable talk is when a teacher explains why they agree or disagree with a student’s answer. In-depth knowledge questions, on the other hand, prompt students to think about and explain their answers, rather than give one that was memorized. On this last point, Dr. Miller stresses that “the one doing the talking is the one doing the learning.”
