The newly-renovated Turner Intermediate School will open its doors to students in grades 2-6 on Monday, Oct. 7, 2019.
Renovations to the building included updates to the central heating, cooling, plumbing, lighting and security systems. New windows, doors, ceilings and floors were installed. Existing masonry was repaired or replaced. With the changes made to the building’s infrastructure, Turner also will now better meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
New furniture and classroom designs for students in grades 2-6 were included in the renovations. Flexible seating options – which research has shown to be effective in improving focus – are available in all classrooms. Dedicated space also was planned for a special education suite and a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math (STEAM) lab that will encourage innovation and collaboration. The spaces allow room for the expansion of the chorus and band programs. On-site counseling services also will be located at the new Turner. Additional space also is available for the planned Spanish Immersion program the District is implementing in future years.
Class sizes at Turner currently are 13 to 16 students, in line with suggested guidelines of 15-20 students that is supported by research.
In addition to the new facilities at Turner, all students in the Wilkinsburg School District who attend Kelly Primary and Turner Intermediate will have new start and end times for the 2019-2020 School Year. Students will now begin their day at 8:40 a.m. and end it at 3:20 p.m. The move will decrease the number of students who are tardy to school, and increase breakfast opportunities for students.
Check out a special sneak peak of the flexible classroom spaces that will occupy the new building. Superintendent Dr. Linda Iverson explains the concept of flexible classroom spaces in this video, and introduces families to the new classroom set up for the building.
A community grand opening event for Turner will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Additional details about the event will be posted to the District website.
