| Social Services at the Wilkinsburg School District |
|
| The Wilkinsburg School District is committed not only to education, but to addressing the pressing issues that can prevent our students from succeeding in school. In 2000, the District created the Social Services Department, which devotes its full attention to counseling students and connecting them, their families and the community to the social service agencies and services that are best suited to solving the specific problems that our students and families are facing, whether those problems are school and education-related or not.

Helping Students Cope |
| Sometimes the pressures of school and life can become overwhelming. If problems at home are making it difficult for you to focus on school, or if school is making it hard for you to function at home, the Social Services Department can help. We provide confidential assistance within each school building. We also work in partnership with compassionate and skilled community agencies that will help you confidentially through our schools.

Assisting Parents, Grandparents and Families |
| Raising school-aged children can be an overwhelming task. The Social Services Department is here to help you with problems-even those NOT related to your children's performance in school- like childcare, medical coverage and healthcare issues, even mental health, single parenting and domestic violence. We will work to coordinate care and avoid duplication of services you may already be receiving from other agencies. Please contact us to learn more. |

Teachers: How You Can Make a Referral |
Teachers and other school personnel are often the first to recognize when a student is in trouble and needs help that goes beyond academic assistance. Teachers, guidance counselors and school personnel play in referring students to social services. If you are concerned about a student, or think that a student and his or her family could benefit from assistance from the Social Services Department, you may make a referral by contacting us via e-mail or phone. You may also contact your Designated Building Representative (usually the guidance counselors or Child Study Coordinators).
The Social Services Department will arrange evaluations and meetings with the student and his or her family members. We will then set forth a plan of action that provides assistance, and involves and respects students and their families.

If you work with an Agency or Social Services Provider |
Social service agencies that serve the Wilkinsburg Community have come together to form the Social Services Providers Network. The Providers Network meets once a month to proactively find ways to collaborate, and establish and strengthen their working relationships.
We work to improve service coordination and eliminate duplication of services. And, we brainstorm around challenges and develop new ideas and partnerships that allow agencies to collaboratively offer our students, their families and our community the best possible care.
We encourage your agency to join the Providers Network. We meet the second Tuesday of each month at Hosanna House at 9 a.m. in the 2nd floor conference room. If your agency would like to participate, please contact the Social Services Department.
