| For the new 2009-2010 school year, Wilkinsburg School District is implementing positive changes that will allow it to better serve its students. One of those changes will be the reintegration of Wilkinsburg Academy Alternative Program students into their respective, home-school buildings. The Academy Alternative Program will continue to maintain its own academic and behavioral programming. The Wilkinsburg School District will thus provide optimum social interaction and growth for all students.
Accordingly, secondary students (grades 7-12) attending the Wilkinsburg Academy Alternative Program will attend the program on the third floor of the High School/Middle School building. Students attending the Wilkinsburg Academy Alternative Elementary Program will attend Academy Program classes within their home elementary school buildings. Students attending the Wilkinsburg Academy Alternative Program Autistic Support Program will attend a classroom located within Kelly Elementary School.
Founded in 2003, the Wilkinsburg Academy Alternative Program focuses on nurturing each student's emotional and social well-being. Since opening, the Academy Alternative Program has maintained separate locations, most recently at the former Mulberry Presbyterian Church and classrooms located next to Kelly Elementary School.
By moving into their respective home school buildings, Academy Alternative Program students will be able to take advantage of a broader range of resources and opportunities. Parents can be assured that the current support program and services that is in place will continue under this new model. In addition, the move will give the District the chance to foster an atmosphere of inclusion and acceptance among its students, creating a more well-rounded education for everyone.
If you should have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact the district's administrative office at (412) 871-2104.
