| Students at Johnston Elementary School collected change as part of the "Pennies for Patients" program to raise money for people afflicted with leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. "Pennies for Patients" is a three-week campaign that raises money to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphona Society.
"Pennies for Patients" began in each school with a Kick-Off Assembly. Teachers were then given collection buckets for each classroom. Each day, students would bring in as much loose change as they could, knowing that their donations were going to help people in need.
Competing by classroom, Johnston students raised a total of $781.26. The highest performing class at Johnston was Ms. Scheuble and Ms. Balsomico's 5th and 6th Grade Cooperative Learning Classroom, who was treated to a special lunch.
"Projects like 'Pennies for Patients' not only teach our students the values of compassion and generosity," said Superintendent Acrhie D. Perrin, Jr., "but they also teach them that by sharing a seemingly small contribution, they can make a huge difference if they work together." |
