First Grader Zane Pegues measures a Sugar Maple in Frick Park

03/14/06

Students from Johnston Elementary attended the Maple Days Festival at the Frick Environmental Center. The children made their own measuring calipers to test whether the sugar maples are big enough to tap. Other activities included visits with a Native American, a pioneer, and a modern sugar farmer, hands-on tree-tapping with an auger, a touch table filed with sugaring supplies, and the opportunity to taste real maple syrup.
