| Teachers, parents, volunteers and children come together to promote pedestrian safety for children.
WHO: Johnston Elementary School, Safe Kids Allegheny County, and FedEx.
WHAT: Safe Kids Allegheny County and FedEx volunteers will lead local activities as part of International Walk to School Day 2008. More than 200 children from Johnston Elementary will participate in the Safe Kids Walk This Way program.
For the ninth year, volunteers will walk children to school in order to demonstrate important safety behaviors. In addition, Safe Kids Allegheny County will conduct walkability checks, speed enforcement campaigns and other activities to teach children important walking safety tips. Over 600 Safe Kids'led International Walk to School Day activities will be taking place across the United States and around the world on this day.

WHY: Across the country each year, approximately 626 children ages 0-14 are killed and there are 38,500 visits to the emergency room due to nonfatal pedestrian injuries. Between 1987 and 2005, the number of child pedestrian fatalities has decreased by 56 percent. Safe Kids Allegheny County activities on International Walk to School Day, are designed to help educate children and families about the importance of pedestrian safety.
International Walk to School Day is dedicated to walking to school with a purpose; to promote physical activity, safety, health and concern for the environment. International Walk to School Day is promoted nationally by The Partnership for a Walkable America.
