| As part of their science curriculum, 2nd graders at Johnston Elementary School studied the life cycle of butterflies by raising Painted Lady butterflies, which were released into nature in late April. When the students received the butterflies, they were in the chrysalis stage. The chrysalis is a hard shell that houses the caterpillars while they undergo metamorphosis.
For weeks, under the direction of teachers Laura Manella and Cindy Fligger, students fed and cared for the butterflies until they were mature enough to be released. On April 30, students excitedly released the butterflies into nature, having fully witnessed the life cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly.
