| On Tuesday, March 22, more than 70 teachers,
parents, students (including 7th graders Schaunna Turner and Tasia Scott, pictured above), administrators and school board members gathered in the Wilkinsburg High School library to view quilts that were handmade by Ms. DePofi's 7th grade class. Also on display were original poems Ms. DePofi's students had written as part of the Middle School's Black History Month curriculum.
The library was decorated with more than 100 poems and quilts, inspired by the work of African American poets. The students were assisted by visiting artist Cheryl Capezzuti of Gateway to the Arts, which is funded by Dominion Peoples and the Arts in Education
Partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency.
Ms. Capezzuti introduced students to the work of renowned quilter and fiber artist Tina Brewer. Ms. Capezzuti and Ms. Brewer were in attendance at last night's reception. We're proud of our 7th graders for their creativity and focus in creating these works and for acknowledging the contributions of black Americans to our nation's intellectual and cultural heritage. |
