Kelly Primary School will be closed for the remainder of the week due to a burst pipe which resulted in extensive water damage to the building.
Sometime over the weekend of February 9-10, the damper actuator failed in the building, which caused the pipes and the unit ventilator to freeze and rupture in the ceiling in Room 8. The damper actuator allows fresh air into the building. When the actuator failed to stay closed, the pipes froze due to the extremely cold temperatures outside, which caused the pipes to burst. Eight classrooms, including STEAM, the kitchen office (including the dry storage room), halls, the cafeteria and the PBIS room were completely flooded and destroyed.
Disaster Restoration Company was called in on Monday, February 11 to assess the damage. Repairs currently are underway. The school is expected to reopen to students on Tuesday, February 19. Due to the amount of time that students have been out of school this week, learning packets are available for students. Parents may pick up the packets on Thursday, February 14 and Friday, February 15 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Students will be required under PA Department of Education regulations to make up the days of active classroom instruction that have been missed this week. Make-up dates will be determined by the School Board and announced at the next meeting.
Additional communications, as necessary, will be sent to parents/guardians on this situation.
