Yesterday, Turner and Kelly Elementary School students in prekindergarten through first grade went on a field trip to see the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra live at Heinz Hall. They learned all about the famous American composer George Gershwin. The orchestra performed some of his more popular works, including “Summertime” and “Rhapsody in Blue”. While the musicians played, a picture book illustrating Gershwin’s life was projected above the stage.
The students were exposed to an unfamiliar style of music, broadening their musical experience and developing their active listening skills. Additionally, they learned about the conductor and the role of various instruments in the orchestra. There is nothing quite like the experience of seeing and hearing music live, performed by world-class musicians! All of our students enjoyed this wonderful trip and look forward to returning to Heinz Hall next year!
