Wilkinsburg School Board Welcomes Two New Board Members

Posted in: Wilkinsburg School District News

We’d like to extend a warm welcome to Ellen Kitzerow and Leigh Corrigan-Owens who joined our school board at the beginning of the year to fill two seat vacancies.

Ellen Kitzerow is an Analyst for the Allegheny County Department of Human Services and is responsible for data collection, analysis and program evaluation for the child welfare system.

She earned her degrees in Art History and Public Policy and Management from Boston University and Carnegie Mellon University. Before becoming a Child Welfare Analyst for the Department of Human Services, she interned with the Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Authority and Department of City Planning. She also previously served as board liaison for the National LGBTQ Task Force, a non-profit in New York City.

Since coming back to Pittsburgh and graduating from Carnegie Mellon University, Ms. Kitzerow has been a resident of Wilkinsburg for three and a half years and currently serves as chair for the Wilkinsburg Arts and Design Commission and is a member of the Wilkinsburg Historical Society.

On joining the Wilkinsburg School Board, Ms. Kitzerow said, “Our public schools are such a valuable community resource, and I have wanted to become more involved for some time. I’m impressed by the changes the school board has made to improve the district over the past year – their transparency, the smooth transition of 7th-12th grade students over to Pittsburgh Westinghouse Academy and the focused goals on the students remaining in the district. My work has helped me become more aware of the needs of the children and their families across our county, especially in Wilkinsburg, and I am looking forward to being a part of future decision making.”

Leigh Corrigan-Owens, an Account Executive for Mal Warwick Associates and is responsible for developing, executing and managing comprehensive direct marketing campaigns for non-profit organizations.

She earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English from Virginia Tech. Before becoming an Account Executive for Mal Warwick Associations, she held marketing and fundraising positions at Kidango, Adams, Hussey and Associates and Pocahontas Press. Following her graduation from Virginia Tech, Ms. Corrigan-Owens taught First-Year English Composition I and II at her alma mater and Business Writing at the New River Community College. She also volunteered and interned for the RAFT Crisis Hotline and Marriage & Family Counseling Center at Virginia Tech.

A resident of Wilkinsburg since 2014, Ms. Corrigan joined the Wilkinsburg School Board to deepen her commitment to the community. “I care a lot about Wilkinsburg, and I am excited by the progress happening within the community and school district,” says Ms. Corrigan-Owens. “I share the board’s commitment to academic excellence for all children and am proud to say that this is a continuation of my devotion to helping children and families build stronger futures.”
