This year marks the 19th year of the Wilkinsburg School District Music Department’s collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University and Pittsburgh Public Schools.   Since July of 2001, WSD has participated in a unique Urban Music Grant.

On November 7, fifth grade students at Turner Intermediate attended a field trip to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.   This unique event culminated in a concert in the Carnegie Music Hall that gave Wilkinsburg Instrumental Music students the opportunity to play side by side with the River City Brass Band.

Also, under the direction of Shawn van Mastrigt, several students from Wilkinsburg and PPS were able to form a collaborative World Drumming Ensemble consisting of about 60 students to perform the song “Take Time In Life,” with the River City Brass Band.    We are very proud of our students, who continue to thrive as they share their love of music.
