School may be out for the summer but Wilkinsburg students are still enjoying opportunities to get acquainted with the Homewood community and their future classmates through these three summer enrichment programs:
Student Envoy Project. This program offered by Pittsburgh Westinghouse Academy, empowers student leaders in grades 6-12 to spread a culture of achievement amongst their peers in their own words and ways. This year, the program will include students from Wilkinsburg who will be attending Pittsburgh Westinghouse Academy in the fall and have shown strong leadership; they were selected through peer, teacher and administrator nominations and an in-person interview.
To prepare the student envoys for the upcoming year, there will be a free four day camp at Carlow University in Oakland this month where students will receive leadership training.
These students aim to promote high academic achievement and positive student relations by leading by example. They will meet regularly throughout the year and receive weekly coaching and support from a dedicated corps of Teacher Envoys. They will also have the opportunity to plan and participate in school activities to showcase their leadership skills.
Camp Harambee. Wilkinsburg students who signed up for summer fun at Camp Harambee, an eight week summer camp offered by the Mount Ararat Community Activity Center in Homewood and Pittsburgh Westinghouse Academy, have an additional chance to get to know the community and their future classmates. The camp includes swimming, arts, crafts and weekly field trips to the Steelers Training Camp, Kennywood Park, Laurel Caverns, PPG Zoo & Aquarium, Idlewild Park & Soak Zone and various museums around Pittsburgh. http://www.macac-inc.org/youth.html
