Build, Fly, Code, LIVE!

Build, Fly, Code is a startup program that helps to create fun and engaging STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) experiences for students. In addition to Wilkinsburg, seven other school districts attended the event.

Divided into two teams of six, our students were asked to participate in five different activities that incorporated both coding and drones. The activities ranged from coding their drones to make them dance, to having them land on cardboard “buildings” as tall as some of the students.

For our students, it was their first encounter with drones. They quickly learned that in order to succeed they had to use communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Each student brought their own individual skill set - some students were excellent communicators, whereas others excelled at supporting and encouraging their team.

“It was a great experience for students to connect with other peers that they don't usually have the chance to connect with. This is an event we’d definitely like to again,” shared Ms. Jessica Willis, Special Education Teacher.

Looking ahead to next year, Build, Fly, Code LIVE wants to incorporate discussions on career paths aligned with coding and drones.

While the field trip’s focus was on the STEM event, the IUP visit also exposed students to college life, aligning with Wilkinsburg's efforts to increase college exposure. This initiative is shared not only by Wilkinsburg but also by Westinghouse Academy.
