Position Overview
The School Crossing Guard plays a vital role in creating a safe environment for children by directing traffic and overseeing behavior at bus stops. The position requires mental and physical alertness, with supervision provided periodically by police personnel.
This is a seasonal, part-time position with work conducted outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Essential Job Functions
- Direct and escort children safely across roads and intersections.
- Stop traffic as needed to allow children to cross safely.
- Assist bus drivers with boarding and exiting procedures.
- Oversee bus stop behavior and report any discipline issues to school principals.
- Report traffic violations to the Police Department.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of traffic safety laws and proper hand signals for traffic control.
- Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
- Strong communication and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Must complete a prescribed training program successfully.
If the position requires operating a vehicle, a valid PA Driver’s License is mandatory.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Outdoor work in various weather conditions, ranging from extreme heat to sub-zero temperatures.
- Standing for up to 1.5 hours at a time (3 hours total per day).
- Occasional walking on snowy or icy surfaces.
- Physical activity, such as lifting, reaching, or twisting, may be required in emergencies.
- Normal corrected vision and hearing are essential.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Must pass a drug screening and physical examination.
- Relevant experience or training that demonstrates required skills and abilities.
