School Safety and Security

Wilkinsburg School District follows the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), a nationally recognized, plain-language approach used by schools across the country to respond to a range of safety situations.

SRP provides clear, consistent actions that are easy for staff and students to understand and practice. Because our schools serve students in Pre-K through Grade 6, all procedures are taught and practiced in ways that are developmentally appropriate, calm, and supportive.

The SRP actions include:

• Hold - This is used when hallways need to remain clear. Students and staff are instructed to stay in their current classrooms or areas until the situation is resolved. 
• Secure - This is used when there is a potential concern outside the building. Exterior doors are locked while normal activities may continue inside the school. 
• Lockdown - This is used when there is a threat inside or immediately around the building. Classroom doors are locked, lights are turned off, and everyone is instructed to remain quiet and out of sight until law enforcement or school officials give further instructions. 
• Evacuate - This is used when students and staff need to safely leave a class, part of the building, or the entire building and move to the designated safe location. 
• Shelter - This is used when students and staff need to take protective actions based on a specific hazard such as severe weather or hazardous materials. Instructions are situation-specific. 

SRP helps ensure that everyone, including students, staff, and visitors, shares a common understanding of safety procedures while supporting a safe and orderly learning environment

Wilkinsburg School District uses ALICE Training, a nationally recognized emergency preparedness program used by many schools across the country.

ALICE helps staff respond effectively in the unlikely event of a serious emergency by focusing on preparedness, communication, and awareness. Because our schools serve students in Pre-K through Grade 6, all safety practices are developmentally appropriate and guided by trusted adults. Students are supported in calm, reassuring ways and are always directed by school staff.

ALICE is an options-based approach that allows schools to respond thoughtfully to the unique circumstances of an emergency. The program includes:

• Alert - Recognize and communicate the initial signs of danger clearly and quickly.
• Lockdown - Secure doors and entry points while preparing for further protective measures.
• Inform - Share real-time information to support decision-making for staff and students.
• Counter - As a last resort, use distraction and disruption techniques to reduce an individual posing a threat's ability to cause harm.
• Evacuate - Remove individuals from harm whenever it is safe to do so.
