Gifted Education

The Wilkinsburg School District is committed to meeting the needs of all learners, including students who demonstrate exceptional intellectual ability. Gifted education services are designed to provide appropriate challenges and support so students can continue to grow academically and reach their full potential.

In Pennsylvania, gifted education is governed by Chapter 16 of the Pennsylvania School Code. 

A student is considered mentally gifted when they demonstrate outstanding intellectual and creative ability that requires specially designed instruction to support learning beyond the regular classroom. 

While an IQ score of 130 or higher may indicate gifted ability, eligibility is not based on IQ alone. The district uses multiple sources of information, including evaluation data and educational performance, when determining whether a student qualifies for gifted services. 

Students who are identified as gifted receive specially designed instruction and enrichment opportunities through a Gifted Individualized Education Plan (GIEP). 

The GIEP outlines individualized learning goals, supports, and enrichment activities designed to meet the student's academic needs. Parents and guardians are important members of the GIEP team and participate in the development and review of the plan. 

If a student is suspected of being gifted, the district may conduct an evaluation with parent or guardian consent. The evaluation considers multiple factors to determine eligibility under Pennsylvania Chapter 16 guidelines.
