Services for Nonpublic School Students

This page explains special education evaluation options for students who attend private or parochial schools. It outlines available pathways for families who are considering services or enrollment in the public school setting. 

If you believe your child may have a disability and needs additional support, there are two pathways to consider based on where your child attends school. 

  • If your child attends a nonpublic (private or parochial) school and will remain enrolled there:
    • You may request an Equitable Participation Evaluation through the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU). 
    • The AIU will review your child's needs and may recommend supports that can be provided within the nonpublic school setting, if available. 
    • Please note that the Wilkinsburg School District does not provide special education services directly to students enrolled in nonpublic schools.
  • If you are considering enrolling your child in public school: 
    • The Wilkinsburg School District can complete a Multidisciplinary Evaluation (MDE) conducted by a certified school psychologist. 
    • Your child must be registered as a resident student of the Wilkinsburg School District before the evaluation process can begin.
    • Your child may continue attending their current nonpublic school during the evaluation process.

If your child is found eligible for special education services, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) will be developed based on services available in the public school setting.
