Special Education

The special education process begins by identifying a student's unique strengths and learning needs. A team of professionals, along with the student's parent(s) or guardian(s), works together to determine the best way to support the child's education. 

Together, the team develops an individualized plan that outlines what the student will learn, how they will learn it, and the services and supports needed to help them succeed.

Special education programs and services are designed to meet each student's individual needs and help prepare them for success in school and beyond. Parent and guardian involvement is an important part of the process and plays a key role in supporting student success.  

Federal and State Laws Protecting Your Child's Rights

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law that establishes the rights of students with disabilities and sets national standards for special education services. In Pennsylvania, these requirements are implemented through Chapter 14 of the Pennsylvania School Code. 

Under IDEA, eligible students have the right to:

  • Receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). 
  • Receive special education services based on their individual needs through an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Access services that help prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living. 
  • Have their educational rights, and the rights of their parent(s) or guardian(s) protected throughout the special education process.
