Purpose of the Online Plan:

The Wilkinsburg School District plans to begin the 2020-2021 school year by orchestrating an engaging Online Learning Plan.  The district administration and board will review and monitor state and CDC data and protocols as it pertains to COVID 19 to reevaluate moving to a Blended Learning Instruction plan during each monthly board meeting.  If and when it is safe to move forward with the Blended Learning Instruction plan, the transition will be communicated to all families and students in a timely manner.

Objective(s):

• It is paramount for the district to prioritize the health and safety of our staff and students.  The district plans to commence online instruction with Google Classroom at the beginning of the year.
• Students will engage in a combination of asynchronous and synchronous learning.
• In the best interests of the students, we will maintain our current daily schedule.

Goals:

• To assure the continuity of instruction
• To raise the rigor of online instruction

Advantages of Synchronous/Asynchronous Online Instruction:

• This model will assure the safety of all students and staff.
• Students will communicate with their teacher in the same way they would for in-person instruction during the scheduled face-to-face online learning (see outline of school day below).
• Parents will get the needed support from the teacher for their student during the day
• If current CDC and state protocols indicate that it is safe, administrators, teachers, staff, and aides will report to their respective buildings Monday-Thursday from 8:00-3:30 and will practice social distancing and wear a mask and/or face shield daily to plan, create and deliver their Google classroom.

How will Synchronous/Asynchronous Online Learning Look Different in the Fall from the Spring?

To the maximum extent possible and feasible, the district will replicate all processes, standards, and procedures that are in place for in-person learning during online instruction.  Specifically:

• Google classroom and ZOOM and/or Google Meets video conferencing tools will be the platform used for synchronous and asynchronous online instruction (waiting on a quote from ZOOM and/or Google Meets for teacher licenses).
• Every student will be provided a Chromebook
• Every student will be expected to join their daily video conferences with their teacher Monday through Thursday before 9:00 a.m. for LIVE lessons.
• During the LIVE call, teachers will instruct students on specific assignments to complete during the asynchronous time blocks.
• Students will be assessed upon completion of assignments and quarterly common assessments will be given.
• Students will be receiving lessons on new skills appropriate for their grade level
• Families that need broadband will be given accessibility
• Teachers will be provided new Chromebooks
• Document cameras will be provided to support video recording of lessons
• Attendance will be taken daily by the teachers, once in the morning and the afternoon during synchronous learning sessions.  If the student does not log back on in the afternoon, the teacher will notify the secretary to change the attendance to half-day.
• Secretaries will input daily attendance on a weekly basis in Infinite Campus
• SAP Coordinators will follow district attendance policies and procedures in contacting parents
• Along with using Google classroom platform, teachers will be participating in professional development through the AIU.

Plan for Online Synchronous/Asynchronous Learning through Google Classroom and ZOOM AND/OR GOOGLE MEETS

• All students will engage in LIVE whole group teaching and learning that will be recorded for students to review during asynchronous learning.  ZOOM AND/OR GOOGLE MEETS real-time sessions will be recorded for student access.  Pre-recorded lessons, daily assignments, and video conferencing lessons with the teacher will be accessible for asynchronous learning.
• Students will be provided with online learning in all content areas: ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies.
• Students will be provided weekly online learning in all special areas.
• Students will receive intervention and enrichment weekly with the support of the reading and math coaches.
• Teachers will have document cameras to use to prepare lessons. LOOM or Screencastify will be used to record lessons.
• Grade level teachers will share the responsibilities when preparing lessons in reading and math.
• All grade level teachers will be co-teachers within each grade level.
• Teachers will share the responsibility of planning lessons and recording videos that will be shared in all classrooms for that specific grade.
• Google Classrooms will be set up in a systematic way that will be similar across a grade level.
• Teachers will work from home on Friday to prepare lessons, provide synchronous small group instruction, complete professional development, collaborate with peers and check work assigned for the week. This will allow the building to be disinfected while there are no staff or students present.
• All students will have Fridays to catch up on weekly assignments and engage in online enrichment activities and district apps. As well as meet in small group LIVE sessions with teachers.
• Students will be expected to adhere to due dates for each assignment.
• Students will be graded on assignments.
• Principals will be able to observe teacher-student interactions and lessons.
• In support of on-line learning, all students will be provided with at-home supplies and consumables.
• Teachers will continue to receive their scheduled 40-minute planning and 30-minute lunch each day.
• We will attempt to find eight teachers, one per grade level, Pre-K through 6th grade, who are interested and available in the evening to assist parents and students if necessary, compensated, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement pending approval by the Board and paid from the CARES funding.
• The district is exploring potential partnerships with daycare/educational providers that can accommodate the schedules of working parents.
• No large group gatherings, faculty meetings. These meetings will continue to be held virtually.
• Instructional Leadership Teams (ILT) and grade level meetings will be held virtually to assure practicing social distancing guidelines.

ZOOM vs. Google Meets

• Google Meet is Google’s version of ZOOM, used for LIVE video conferencing
• Google Meets is built into Google Classroom and easy to use for both teachers and students
• Teachers can lock students within the Google Meeting due to it being a part of Google Classroom.  Students cannot do anything else while • that meeting is in session.
• Google Meets Features:

      • – The ability to mute all students at the same time
      • – Ability for students to raise their hand and ask questions of the teacher
      • – Ability to work on a digital whiteboard or share screen while viewing all their students
      • – Closed captioning in additional languages
      • – Block anonymous join requests (increases meeting security)
      • – Break-out sessions (split video conference into smaller groups)
      • – Ability to Record Meetings
      • – Noise-canceling and increased low light visibility
      • – Attendance tracking
      • – Q&A/Polling
      • – Block students after ejection for less disruption to classroom instruction
      • – LIVE translated captions and meeting transcript
