Wilkinsburg Announces Turner Intermediate’s Musical for the 2025-2026 School Year!

After eight weeks of anticipation, Turner Intermediate has revealed its musical for the 2025-2026 school year: Shrek!

Leading up to the big reveal on Monday, November 10, the district shared a weekly video countdown, eliminating one show each week. By Friday, November 7, only four possible shows remained: Annie, Seussical, Willy Wonka, and Shrek

Shrek will be Turner Intermediate's fourth musical. For the past three years, Turner Intermediate participated in the Disney Musicals in Schools (DMiS) Program, an initiative designed to introduce students to the collaborative art of musical theater, strengthen arts programming, and foster partnerships among students, faculty, staff, and the greater community.

Through the DMiS Program, Turner Intermediate benefited from a free performance license, showkit materials, and weekly visits from a team of two Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Arts Education Teacher Artists. The district is grateful for the opportunity to present three shows through the program - The Jungle Book, Frozen, and Winnie the Pooh - and is now a proud graduate of the program.

With the conclusion of the DMiS Program, Turner's musicals will continue under the new name, "Turner's After School Musical Theater."

"We are thrilled to continue performing and creating amazing shows under the direction of our staff," said Mr. Shawn Van Mastrigt, Turner's music teacher and director of the musical. "We are forever grateful for the support of the Disney Musicals in Schools Program and look forward to sharing our productions with the community."

Students interested in participating in this year's musical must submit an application by Monday, November 24. Auditions will follow, with cast selections announced by Friday, December 5, and practices beginning on Monday, December 15.

Performances are scheduled for Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9. Turner Intermediate looks forward to welcoming younger students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members for this year's production of Shrek
