ESL Program
At Wilkinsburg School District, we are proud to support students whose first language is not English through our English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Our English learners (ELs) join their native English-speaking peers in both content and special area classes while receiving accommodations and adaptations to make learning accessible. In addition, students participate in daily ESL instruction with a certified Program Specialist, helping them build confidence and proficiency in English in a focused, supportive environment.
The ESL program is designed to help students grow in all areas of language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. As they develop these skills, our ELs are able to fully participate in their grade-level classes, engage with their peers, and take advantage of all the academic opportunities our schools offer.
Students’ progress is carefully monitored each year through the WIDA ACCESS for ELs assessment. When students reach the level of proficiency needed to exit the program, they continue to be supported and monitored for an additional two years to ensure they remain successful in all aspects of school life.
The ultimate goal of our ESL program is not only to help students become proficient in English, but also to create an environment where they feel confident, included, and empowered to thrive academically and socially. We are dedicated to helping every EL student gain the language skills they need while fully participating in the life of the school community.
